Polyhedra: Eye Candy to Feed the Mind
A book filled with beautiful images of metal geometric sculptures and an Introduction to Polyhedra chapter.
As a Project Manager and Maker of this book, I oversaw the whole project and did the work of:
1) Making the art for the Exploratorium, a hands on museum in San Francisco.
As an Artist-in-Residence, I made a set of 15 metal shapes. I picked these forms because the mathematical relations between these polyhedra tells a rich story about their geometry.
I worked with an excellent team from the Exploratorium who built a circular room to display these mathematical sculptures.
I designed the files for water jet process of cutting steel, then bent and bolted the pieces together, and picked the colors for the powder coating process, which sealed the metal.
2) Photographing the art work, choosing the images, and using Photoshop to perfect the pictures.
3) Researching and writing an introduction to polyhedra, for readers ages 7 and up, to share the easily accessible geometric concepts for those who want to learn without having to read a dense math book.
4) Making diagrams to explain the ideas in the text using illustrations I made in watercolor, colored pencils, graphite pencils, photos of laser cut paper models, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
5) Curating the whole book to help the reader to see how these 15 shapes tell a story of interconnected symmetries.
